What Is Aviation? Types and Categories

¿Qué es la aviación? Tipos y categorías

SCENARIO 1 OF 2

A company uses a small unmanned aircraft to photograph farmland for a paying agricultural client. Which branch of aviation does this best fit?

A quick scenario check — tap the option you think applies, then see why.

Define aviation and aerospace, distinguish the major branches of the industry (general aviation, commercial aviation, military aviation, unmanned aviation, and space/aerospace), and give a real example of each.

Most students entering an aviation program picture only one thing — usually airline pilots or fighter jets — without realizing how many genuinely different careers, industries, and kinds of flying the word "aviation" actually covers. Understanding the full breadth early helps students recognize which parts of the field actually match their own interests, rather than assuming aviation means only one specific path.

ENTIENDE

DILO EN INGLÉS · SAY IT IN ENGLISH

“Aviation isn't just airlines — it includes general aviation, commercial flying, the military, drones, and space, and they often overlap.”

Ejemplo guiado

Consider a real aircraft manufacturer: the same company might build small general aviation aircraft for flight schools, sell larger aircraft to regional airlines (commercial aviation), and also produce components for military transport aircraft (military aviation) — three different branches of aviation, one company. This is common in the real industry rather than an exception.

Real Aviation Application / Aplicación real en aviación

Understanding these branches directly helps with career planning: a student interested in engineering might look at general aviation aircraft manufacturers, commercial airliner manufacturers, military contractors, drone companies, or aerospace/space companies — genuinely different employers and career paths, all under the same broad "aviation and aerospace" umbrella this lesson introduces.

Ask Your Teacher / Pregúntale a tu maestro

  • Which branch of aviation does most of the flying in our local area or state fall under?
  • How do companies move between different branches of aviation, like from military contracts to commercial aircraft?
  • What's the difference between how commercial space companies and government space agencies operate?

HAMPTON'S .02 CENTS

When students picture "aviation careers," they almost always picture pilots first. Use this lesson to deliberately widen that picture early in the course — the goal isn't to talk anyone out of pursuing piloting, it's to make sure students actually know the full menu of real options exists before they narrow their focus.

It Would Behoove You… Continue to the Aviation Infrastructure, Organizations, and Careers lesson in this same unit to see the real organizations and career paths that make each of these branches function day to day.
