Air Traffic Controller

Air Traffic

WHAT THIS CAREER ACTUALLY IS

Air traffic controllers work in towers, radar approach facilities, or en route centers, giving pilots instructions on headings, altitudes, and clearances to keep aircraft safely separated and traffic flowing efficiently. It's a federal (FAA) job with mandatory retirement at 56 and a hiring age cap — new hires must be under 31 at their FAA Academy start date.

WHAT YOU CAN DO IN HIGH SCHOOL

  • ✓Build strong skills in quick mental math, spatial reasoning, and staying calm under time pressure — these matter more than any specific class
  • ✓Research whether any nearby college runs an FAA-approved AT-CTI (Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative) program
  • ✓Watch for FAA's public hiring announcements on faa.gov/atc-hiring — timing matters since the age cutoff is strict
  • ✓Consider ROTC or military aviation programs if a military ATC route interests you
