Avionics Technician

Avionics

WHAT THIS CAREER ACTUALLY IS

Avionics technicians work on radios, navigation systems (GPS, VOR receivers), autopilots, flight instruments, and increasingly complex integrated cockpit displays — testing circuits, troubleshooting wiring, and installing new equipment under strict FAA-approved procedures.

WHAT YOU CAN DO IN HIGH SCHOOL

  • ✓Take electronics, circuits, or computer science courses — avionics is electronics applied to aircraft
  • ✓Look for CTE avionics or electrical technology programs
  • ✓Build basic soldering/wiring skills through robotics, electronics, or maker-space clubs
  • ✓Ask a local avionics shop or FBO about shadowing or entry-level shop work

REAL ROUTES IN — CHOOSE WHAT FITS YOU

TRADE / TECHNICAL SCHOOL

Dedicated avionics technician program

Programs specifically focused on aircraft electronics, often paired with A&P coursework, prepare graduates for entry-level avionics shop work.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Avionics or electronics technology associate degree

A broader electronics/electrical technology associate degree, sometimes with an avionics specialization, is a common route into the field.

APPRENTICESHIP

On-the-job training at a certificated repair station

Many avionics technicians train directly under experienced technicians at an FAA-certificated repair station rather than through a dedicated program.

MILITARY

Military avionics/electronics training

Military aircraft electronics training translates directly to civilian avionics work and is a well-established route into the field.

CERTIFICATION PATH

No single universal certificate is required to work in avionics (unlike the A&P for general maintenance) — many technicians pursue an A&P certificate alongside avionics training, and some roles benefit from an FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License.
