Private / Commercial Pilot
Pilots
WHAT THIS CAREER ACTUALLY IS
Pilots operate aircraft safely under FAA regulations, using instruments and visual references to navigate, communicate with ATC, and manage the aircraft through every phase of flight. Building toward an airline career means accumulating flight hours and ratings over years, not a single certificate.
WHAT YOU CAN DO IN HIGH SCHOOL
- ✓Student pilot training can start well before turning 18 — solo flight is allowed starting at age 16
- ✓Look for a local flight school, EAA chapter, or Civil Air Patrol program for an introductory flight
- ✓Study for the FAA private pilot knowledge test using real, current FAA study materials
- ✓Consider a collegiate aviation program if you want a structured path toward an airline career
REAL ROUTES IN — CHOOSE WHAT FITS YOU
CERTIFICATE
Independent Part 61 flight training
Training with an independent flight instructor under 14 CFR Part 61 — flexible scheduling, typically more total flight hours required than a Part 141 school.
TRADE / TECHNICAL SCHOOL
Part 141 flight school
An FAA-approved structured curriculum (14 CFR Part 141) that can qualify a student for a certificate with fewer minimum flight hours than the Part 61 route.
4-YEAR DEGREE
Collegiate aviation degree program
A bachelor's degree from an approved aviation program can qualify a graduate for a Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) certificate at a reduced total flight-hour requirement compared to the standard 1,500-hour ATP minimum.
MILITARY
Military pilot training
Military flight training is a long-established route to an airline career, with flight hours and experience that translate to civilian certificates and ratings.
CERTIFICATION PATH
Student Pilot Certificate → Private Pilot Certificate (minimum age 17 for airplane) → additional ratings/Commercial Pilot Certificate (minimum age 18) → Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (minimum age 23, 1,500 flight hours, or a reduced R-ATP minimum with a qualifying aviation degree) — all under 14 CFR Part 61.
